American Football 11 Sept 2008

The Pittsburgh Steelers expect that their first line quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be able to play in this weekend’s game against the Cleveland Browns. He missed practice this week because of a sore shoulder but is said to be sufficiently healed to start Sunday. Their opening game last week saw Roethlisberger play about ¾ of their match up against the Houston Texans, which resulted in a win by a score of 38-17. Both cornerback Deshea Townsend and left tackle Marvel Smith are also light on the practice field this week as Smith tends to a groin strain; Townsend a bruised heel. They are expected to join Roethlisberger for the game this weekend.
It does not bode well for the New England Patriots as their quarterback and leader Tom Brady will be out for the season. His injury to his left knee, sustained when Brady was hit by Chiefs safety Bernard pollard during their game that ended in Patriot victory (score 17-10). The knee will require surgery that will end the season early for the MVP. The loss will be verily detrimental to their chances of returning to the Super Bowl this year. Brady’s been replaced by Matt Cassel who will start this weekend versus the New York Jets.

Baseball 11 Sept 2008

Hand injuries plagued American baseball teams the Los Angeles Angels and the Pittsburgh Pirates this week. Jered Weaver of the Angels hurt his hand by suffering cuts sustained by staples on the bottom side of the dugout bench in Detroit. His middle and ring fingers on his right pitching hand were sliced. Subsequently, he has been taken off the line up for their game against the New York Yankees and will be replaced by right hander Ervin Santana., who also led the team last week against the Chicago White Sox.
Meanwhile, the Pirates will miss Jack Wilson for what looks like the rest of the season, at this point. The shortstop has sustained a hairline fracture in his right index finger, and has missed the last six games. Prior to the hurt, he’d earned 22 RBI’s this season and was hitting at .274 with one home run. The team has him listed as injured and for now will refrain from placing him on the disabled list, in the hope that they’ll be able to put him in as a pinch hitter, or pinch runner late in the season.
