Football4Profit: News- Horse Racing: Zarkava

The filly Zarkava is back in favor with the bookmakers, after her remarkable win Sunday in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp. She’d been scarce seen since her impressive victory at French Oaks in June, but despite it being her first start since, she showed nothing but eagerness for the finish line as she rained down on the competition, ridden by jockey Christophe Soumillon. Zarkava is now the reining favourite for upcoming Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe, and owner Aga Khan must be pleased with the offers for her win. Following her pre-race time trial, the numbers shortened again. Ladbrokes and Hills both quote her on beating boys at 7/4 odds; Totesport quote her at 13/8 while Coral stay at 6/4 odds, still keeping her the favourite. If she pulls through, it’d make more than money, it’d make a record as well, as the last time a female horse took the Arc was in 1992 by Urban Sea; and the last filly to win both the Vermeille and the Arc was 29 years ago by Three Troikas. Damien Walker, a spokesperson for Totesport gave the media some additional information about the firm’s take on her chances, comparing her to Dancing Brave in the way that she came up from the very back of the pack to take the lead in what seemed like an easy manner. He continued, “After the race we cut Zarkava to 2/1 from 11/4, but punters thought 2/1 about this filly was better than money in the bank and we have been forced to cut her odds again to just 13/8.” The interview went on as Walker placed her ahead of competition such as Duke of Marmelade, Youmzain, and Soldier of Fortune in terms of giving her 11lbs. Though nay-sayers might hang on to the weaker vat of competition that she came up against at Vermeille, the fact still stands, Walker says, that it doesn’t diminish Zarkava’s run.  “…[and] Dar Re Mi was a good runner-up in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks and she has been treated with contempt, “ he concluded.
