Football4Profit: News- World Cup 9/9/08

Sweden’s World Cup team will meet up with Hungary for the qualifier this week, sans midfielder Tobias Linderoth. The player had just come back to  playing actively from a long stint on the injured list when he sustained a hurt to his foot early on in the game against Albania. The team will also hit the field without the assistance of goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson who (somehow) hurt his fingers during warm-ups before the game Saturday. Apparently, the hurt wasn’t too sever, however, as he is still scheduled to play Wednesday against Stockholm. Just in case, Lars Lagerback, coach for the Sweden reps, has called in Eddie Gustafsson to back up.

Romania coach Victor Piturca could be treading on thin ice in the near future if he can’t get his team’s performance under control. Their 0-3 loss to team Lithuania this week, made an embarrassing defeat for the home team, more so as they haven’t lost a home game in three years. The World Cup qualifiers are certainly not the place to start up a new losing streak. Though many have placed the blame for the poor performance on Piturca, the Romanian Football Federation seem to have a soft spot for him: "It was a shameful result but it's not the time to discuss Piturca's dismissal now," said predident Mircea Sandu. Speculation has risen that Piturca’s promised 2010 retirement may come early if the scores don’t start turning around.

While Romania battles with scoring problems, the Czech Republic is struggling to keep their players healthy enough to give them a chance for the World Cup 2010. Both captain Tomas Rosicky and striker Vaclav Sverkos are injured and will miss out on the qualifier against Northern Ireland. 24-year old Sverkos has a hurt muscle in his right leg; he currently plays for Banik Ostrava. Karel Rada, coach for the club, does not intend to replace him. Rosicky is still out on a long-term injury list with his knee problems.
