American Football 17 Sept 2008

The Oakland Raiders and the Cleveland Browns both suffered losses due to injury this week; the Raiders came out in victory nonetheless while the Browns lost their chance against the Steelers. For the Raiders, their running back Justin Vargas had to leave Sunday’s game about halfway through the second quarter. His attempt to run down the sideline to gain yardage was spoiled by the presence of Pat Thomas, long before the ball came near to being ready for a catch, thrown by quarterback JaMarcus Russell. The play left Fargas on the ground, clutching the inside of his leg; he left the field with a strain to the groin muscle.
Meanwhile, it was evident just how much the Cleveland Browns missed out on Donte’ Stallworth’s participation. They lost at a devastating 28-10, as the wide receiver was still on the bench for a leg injury he sustained during warm-ups before the team’s season opener last week. His role on the team was likely to be pitted against quarterback Derek Anderson. Before the game before the Cowboys, his strain to his quadriceps prevented him from playing in either game. It is unknown when he will return to the field.

Baseball 17 Sept 2008

Baseball had a mild week, with only a mystery departure from the NY Yankees’ field and an injury-related goodbye for the Seattle Mariners. Carl Pavano of the Yankees has been plagued with injuries, and he was ushered off the mound by manager and trainer Joe Girardi to the thundering “boos” of the crowd. The exit occurred during the 6th inning of Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay, though no answers have been given in relation to the explanation for his departure. Since his deal with the Yankees, which was signed before the start of the 2005 season, he’s only played 24 games, a small number considering the $39.95 million fee that was paid for the 4 year contract. His first 23 starts with the Yanks left him with a 4.85 ERA, and stats of 7-7 for the right hander.
Sunday also marked the final game play performance for third baseman Adrian Beltre of the Seattle Mariners. He has been playing with a torn ligament in his left thumb and has decided to opt for surgeries both on his hand and shoulder to repair damage. The decision will take him off the field for the rest of the season. He earned the longest hitting streak in the major leagues with a tremendous 15 games straight. Beltre had stats of 76 RBI’s, and was hitting .270 with 25 home runs.
