Football4Profit: News- Football Two years ago, Hartlepool earned themselves a 23-match
winning streak that resulted in their promotion to the Coca-Cola League One.
At the time, it was predicted that the club would continue soaring to the
higher levels of the League on their first year of play. And they didn’t
disappoint too early on, earning sixth place in early October of last year.
Impressive to say the least for newcomers to the league. The death of
midfielder Michael Maidens had a dramatic effect on the club, though,
causing a perfectly understandable, but somewhat disappointing circumstance
that effected their performance on the field. Even once some time had
passed, Hartlepool wasn’t quite able to regain the momentum they had started
the campaign with. They spent much of the season trying to keep their heads
above water, and battling against pessimism such as was emanating from the
likes of Jeff Stelling, tv sports presenter, lamenting their performance
Saturday after Saturday. By the last nine games as visitors, with only one
win to show, they ended the season quite the opposite of how they began it,
and the disappointing conclusion can’t have done much in terms of raising
their spirits for the new season. The trick will be whether Danny Wilson,
football manager, will be able to somehow regenerate the hopeful
“we-can-do-it” attitude that got them into the league, and perhaps they’ll
be able to live up to some of last season’s expectations; a little late is
better than never. Colchester will be coming to compete on their home field,
a mild advantage to start off the new season with. Colchester in and of
themselves is a lucky break for Hartlepool, for the team is trying to regain
their balance after having lost a few key players in recent weeks. Many of
the ante-post previews have already gone over the U’s possible hang-ups as
the new season begins, and we’ll only add that there’s a good chance the
team will enter the campaign at Victoria Park as if, for in reality they
will be for many, they are the favourites for promotion. The difficulty lies
in whether the club will be able to sustain the energy as the games
continue, with less rest and more demands, and whether they’ll be able to
keep up once the adrenaline has worn off. Odds are 6/4 that Hartlepool will
stand up to past expectations and take the win on their home turf.
