Johnny Murtagh is looking at 11/8 odds, up as William Hill’s favourite for
top jockey for the upcoming Glorious Goodwood tournament. Murtagh is
supported by racers Halfway to Heaven, Henry the Navigator and Honolulu; but
is closely followed by competitor Ryan Moore, with odds at 6/4, and Frankie
Dettori with odds at 9/2. Tony Kenny, a spokesperson for William Hill, was
quoted as saying, “I don't think it will surprise to punters that Johnny is
favourite to be top jockey at Glorious Goodwood.
The Murtagh/Aidan O'Brien combination have plundered a lot of the major
prizes in Britain this season and we're expecting that trend to continue at
Goodwood next week.” The overall odds: Top Jockey at Glorious Goodwood,
according to William Hill Bet- J Murtagh (11/8 odds), R L Moore (6/4 odds),
L Dettori (9/2 odds) J Fortune (14/1 odds), J Fanning (16/1 odds), S Sanders
(also 16/1 odds), R Hughes (25/1 odds) and R Hills (33/1 odds).
Things are looking good for African Skies. The horse has upped her odds to
33/1 for the Stan James UK 1,000 Guineas contest with the sponsors. This
change resulted directly from their win at the Group 3 Princess Margaret
Stakes, at Ascot. Laura Stephens, the Public Relations manager for the team
was quoted as saying, following the success: “African Skies was beaten two
and a half lengths by the 6/1 favourite for the Stan James UK 1,000 Guineas
Cuis Gharie at Royal Ascot. And Highest Quality who beat her on her debut
has gone on to win a Listed event at Sandown so the form looks very solid.”
Aiden O’Brien aims to break his record set in 2001 of 23 wins, with further
goals to break the world record trainer Bobby Frankel of 25 Group/Grade 1
(American) winners in a season. His odds have gone from 4/6 to 8/13 to this
end. O’Brien’s win at King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes makes his
14th Group1 win; he hopes to follow it closely with a win at the Phoenix
Stakes with Master Craftsman. O’Brien enjoys his success from a number of
venues and sides, as master for Bally Doyle, as well as Halfway to Heaven in
Nassau, Henry the Navigator in the Sussex Stakes, Peeping Fawn in the
Yorkshire Oaks, and Soldier of Fortune and Frozen Fire in the Juddmonte. A
spokesperson for Hills, Kate Miller, was quoted as saying, "Aidan quite
clearly has the Midas touch this season with everything he touches turning
to gold, and with more of his stars out in the coming weeks things can only
get even better for him."
King George and Queen Elizabeth’s Stakes at Ascot resulted in the Duke of
Marmelade’s odds jumping from 7’s to a 5/1 shot for the Prix de l’Arc de
Triomphe, following his half-length win Saturday. The victory made for the
4th Group One win for Aiden O’Brien, but it was not come by easily, as Papal
Bull passed by on the final furlong, eventually earning his position as
Runner-Up. In the last moments, though, Danehill’s son pushed his way
through to earn a half- of a length gain by the time the ribbon was crossed,
adding to his master’s impressive season. Blue Square’s spokesman George
Primarolo was quoted as saying, "Duke Of Marmalade’s win in the King George
showed he’s got courage as well as class and he can now lay claim to being
the best older horse in Europe. He’d be a serious contender for Arc glory if
the ground came up quick at Longchamp but the Parisian weather can be gloomy
at that time of year and with his trainer also having Soldier Of Fortune in
the race, punters will be having to second guess on a number of factors."
King George runner-up Papal Bull is a 20/1 shot for the Arc.
Next Friday’s Totesport Mile at Glorious Goodwood should enjoy the company
of Mark Johnston’s Totesport International winner Laa Rayb: his odds are
currently posted as an 8/1 favourite, down from a 20/1. There is an element
of chance though, as his master has yet to commit the racer to the
competition, liking usually to offer his horses a 14-day break in between
races.
Totesport International at Ascot is turning into quite a betting party!
By far though, the wager that has attracted the most attention is
Mastership, who got priced at 11/1 odds by Pricewise early on. John Quinn’s
came from 11/1 to 8/1 with Coral. In the King George, Duke of Marmelade
remains a clear favourite, but his odds have been adjusted from 8/11 to 5/6
by Ladbrokes.
MasterCraftsman is on the scene as the newest favourite
for the 2,000 Guineas Tournament! His win with a remarkable four-and-a-half
length lead at the Independent Waterford Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh
resulted in his odds being significantly bumped up to 5/1. Before the start
of the race, the colt was at 4/1- but he soon cleared the bustle of the
crowd at the command of Johnny Murtagh, leaving even even-monied favourite
Art Connoisseur in the dust. The major firms were all in agreement when
Totesport, Coral and Blue Square all adjusted their odds to 5/1 for the
Newmarket competition, but Ladbrokes is staying independent with odds at
8/1. Totesport spokesperson Damian Walker said, “This was a seriously
impressive win and we had no hesitation in going 5/1 about Mastercraftsman
for the 2,000 Guineas straight after the race. Art Connoisseur was an
impressive Group 2 winner of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and yet he
had no answer to Mastercrafstman. Once again O'Brien has a stranglehold on
the 2,000 Guineas as he also has the 8/1 second favourite, Rip Van Winkle.”
Totesport was not the only to comment; David Stevens, on behalf of Coral had
this to add: “Rip Van Winkle went to the head of the Classic betting after
his Group Three win last week, but he's now been eclipsed by Mastercraftsman,
who could not have beaten a Group One field in greater style.” Last but not
least, Blue Square’s George Primarolo was quoted as concluding, “This was
probably the most impressive performance from a two year-old that we have
seen in Europe this season and Mastercraftsman certainly deserves his place
at the head of the betting for next year's 2000 Guineas.” With it all said
and done, Art Connoisseur sits at 20/1 with Coral, VC Bet and Stan James.
