Football4Profit: News- Transfers in Football
Benfica has acquired Jose Antonio Reyes on loan from Atletico de Madrid. The
contract also includes the option of a permanent move for the Spanish
international. The 24 year old has previously played for Arsenal, Sevilla
and Real Madrid before he was traded to Atletico last campaign. He’s not
played, however, for the national team since 2006 despite his having scored
4 goals in 21 appearances for the team. The player will not be the only
newcomer to the team; rather he’s the fourth that new Spanish coach Quique
Sanchez for Benfica- following Javier Balboa from Real Madrid, midfielder
Pablo Aimar from Real Zarazoga, and Carlos Martinez in from Recreativo
Huelva.
Gadzhi Gadzhiev has been fired from coaching team Saturn. They listed his
performance as coach- ie his number of losses- as the reason for letting
Gadzhiev go. They lost at VfB Stuttgart with a score of 3-0, ending their
chances at the Intertoto Cup. Following the defeat they went on to lose
successively to multiple teams from Russian Premier-Lige, and was
consequently knocked out of the last 16 for the Russian Cup, laying down
before the feet of Volga Ulyanovsk. As the termination is immediate, Saturn
will be coached in the meantime of finding a permanent replacement, by
Dmitri Galyamin.
The development by team Fulham for their acquisitions in preparation for the
2008/2009 Premiership Season may be nearing completion as they’ve finished
signing England striker Andrew Johnson. Johnson will be coming in from
Everton for, reportedly, a transfer fee of €13.2m. The contract has been
signed for the next four years, and has just been finalized this week after
further medical exams dispelled fears about the seriousness of an injury to
Johnson’s ankle, previous feared to require surgery. Johnson’s performance
last season with Everton, an impressive 22 goals over 73 games, will likely
indicate his starting alongside Bobby Zamora, also new to Fulham.
Aston Villa are trying to boost up their defence with a couple of additional
players, a strategy that’s come into play since power defender Wilfred Bouma
suffered a long-term ankle injury this preseason. Hopefully, their choices
will be enough to bring them through; neither of the men have been a regular
choice for England, though both have played for the country. Nicky Shorey
will be joining the team from Reading, supposedly for a fee of €4.4m for
three years. After Aston Villa had the left back, they went on to talks with
Luke Young, who recently signed a contract from Middlesbrough for a fee of
€6.4. We’ll see if the club is satisfied with their two choices, or if more
transfers are in the future. Twenty-nine year old French international Pascal Chimbonda has followed
in Tainio’s footsteps in terms of moving to Sunderland. The multitalented
defender has signed, reportedly, a three year deal for an undisclosed fee,
moving him from Tottenham Hotspur to their Premier League rivals’ club:
manager Roy Keane’s Sunderland. Wednesday marked the transfer of another
teammate, Teemu Tainio, making two switches in less than a week- and Keane
may not be finished. It seems Keane may also have his eye on another
Frenchman, Younes Kaboul, and midfielder Steed Malbranque as well.
Portsmouth gains Peter Crouch
Crouch, the 27-year old England striker has signed a deal for reportedly
€13.8m. He’ll leave Liverpool and return to Portsmouth having played for
them during the 2001/2002 season. This marks the end of a 3 year period
playing for Anfield, once his medical has been completed. Crouch struggled
to hold his place last year after the signing of Fernando Torres, despite
having scored 42 goals in 135 games for Liverpool.
Diego Signs with Liverpool
Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri has signed with Liverpool for a four
year contract, and will be backup to Pepe Reina. The 25-year old player from
Palmeiras will mark the third major arrival to the team at Anfield after
Andrea Dossena and Philipp Degen, fullbacks. Cavalieri, a legal resident of
Italy, has been quoted, “I know it won’t be easy to get into the team. I
watched some Liverpool games in both the Premier League and Champions League
last year and I know Pepe is a very good goalkeeper.”
Arsenal acquires Samir Nasri
France’s midfielder Samir Nasri has signed a “long-term” contract with
Arsenal. The 21-year old player from Marseille made his deal for an
undisclosed fee, but it has been rumored to be around €14.5m. Manager Arsene
Wenger had this to say about the move: “He is young, quick and technically
an outstanding player. Samir has shown great potential with his performances
for Marseille and the French national team over the past two seasons and he
will add great quality to our squad.”
Sessegnon moves to PSG
A four year contract has been signed between 24 year old midfielder Stephane
Sessegnon and Paris Saint-Germain. The Benin international player appeared
for the Stade Leon-Bollee group in 61 Ligue 1 events, and scored six goals.
PSG president Charles Villeneuve says, “One of his main assets is the fact
that he’s fast and gets forward.”
Sidwell to move to Aston Villa
Midfielder Steve Sidwell will be transferring from Chelsea, having started
for only 13 matches since his move from Reading one year ago. The former
Under-21 England International has agreed to move for an estimated €6.2m
fee, and a three-year contract. The transfer will also result, most likely,
in that Gareth Barry will move to Liverpool. The England midfielder has
already been passed over by Aston Villa, and he’s recently been suspended
for talking publicly about his desire to leave the team.
Betis receives Aurelio over Fenerbahce
Brazilian born Mehmet Aurelio has signed a contract with Betis. The 30-year
old Turkey mid-fielder’s contract was up with Fenerbahce and has made a deal
with Betis for the next three years. Aurelio represented Turkey at EURO
2008, and is the club’s first new recruit of the close season. In 2006,
Aurelio gained Turkish citizenship, after joining Fenerbahce in 2003, from
Trabzonspor. He assisted the team in gaining three league titles.
Laporta acts after Barcelona resignations
Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, announced he will leave his future
with the club in the hands of the general assembly, after 8 (of 17) board
directors resigned Thursday. Spanish medias have reported that the almost
3,000 club delegates, who represent the members, will meet in September to
decide. Laporta did not receive the support he had hoped for after Sunday’s
vote of confidence, but his opponents did not make the minimum vote
requirements to force his resignation; they were six points off with a tally
of 60.6 percent of the nearly 40,000 votes cast.
